• Earlier when you applied for citizenship the days before permanent residency was not considered into account for citizenship. In contrast, the days before permanent residency are considered now for citizenship to the maximum time period of 1 year (Count 1 day as half day to a maximum of 365 days which are considered by IRCC)

For example: If you are a citizen in Canada for 2 years before permanent resident card on study permit then you can consider that as 1 year of your requirement in Citizenship of 3 years out of 5 years.

• Earlier the applicants had to meet other criteria i.e. to declare their intent to stay in Canada if they wanted to get Canadian citizenship after permanent residency.

• Also, language proof is also a requirement of Canadian citizenship after permanent residency wherein a candidate needs to appear for Citizenship test of either of the two national languages of Canada i.e. English or French.

If all these conditions are met then you can apply for citizenship and your application will be processed in 12 months.
