Parent & Grand Parents Immigration

As a permanent resident or Canadian citizen you can apply for PR for your parents or grandparents under the family sponsorship program and invite them to stay with you by sponsoring them.

By sponsoring your parent or grandparent you agree to take the responsibility of your parent or grandparent to support them financially once they arrive to Canada. You should make sure that they do not have to seek any social assistance from the Canadian government at any point of time.

Incase of a common law partner , spouse or conjungal partner willing to be a co-sponsorer his/her income can be considered for sponsorship purpose , to meet the minimum threshold income to stand eligible for sponsorship, provided he/she agrees to sign the deed or agreement as a co-signer to take up the financial responsibility along with the main sponsorer.

The applicants for PR (parents or grandparents) need to go through a medical examination as well as criminal checks and background checks. A applicant with criminal background or who are likely to pose a threat to Canadas security may not be allowed to enter Canada.

The sponsorer should also meet some requirements in order to sponsor a parent or grandparent to Canada like :

  1. They should meet the minimum income level threshold to take up the financial responsibility of their parents or grandparents in terms of their basic requirements like food, clothing, shelter , medical healthcare services of eye care and dental and those which are not included in the public health care services.
  2. You must be 18 years of age or older and should be living in Canada.

You must sign a sponsorship agreement which promises that you would  support your parents or grandparents financially for a term of 3 to 10 years depending on their age. The time period begins on the day they arrive in Canada.

You may not stand eligible to sponsor your parents or grandparents in cases where :

  1. You have defaulted in terms of financial responsibility previously when offered sponsorship to a relative.
  2. Defaulted in a court ordered support order for e.g alimony or child support.
  3. Asked for financial assistance from the Canadian government for reasons other than disability.
  4. Convicted of crime, been in prison, convicted of any offence earlier against a relative.
  5. Have been declared bankruptcy and not released from it still.

To apply for sponsorship you need to register and apply online and fill up a submission form within 30 days from date of issue. The  form is reviewed by the Canadian government who may or may not send an invitation to apply. The government selects 10,000 random cases and sends the ITA to them. The quota changes every year and the number of invitation issued may increase or decrease.

The parent/grandparent simultaneously need to apply for Permanent Resident Status.

The process of application earlier was not online and all the documents had to be submitted in hard copy. Since the year 2017 the online system has been introduced which enables the applicants to apply online as well as submit the entire documentation online and within the draw system the ITA are issued and intimated through an email to the applicant by the Canadian government.

The family size to derive the minimal income requirements should include yourself, your spouse or common – law partner and dependent children. The next step is to count the number of people you are sponsoring like both parents or grandparent or single parent and grandparent and their dependents if any.

Incase of a co signer or you being a co signer still have valid undertakings covering any relative still in financial terms as well as if there are any dependents of the co signer in that case the co signers income cannot be counted to meet the minimum financial requirements based on the low income cut – offs.
